Derrick “Smoker” Freeman is a New Orleans drummer, percussionist, producer, vocalist, and bandleader whose career reflects the depth and evolution of the city’s musical traditions.

Known for his dynamic, groove-driven style, Freeman has built a career performing across genres while remaining deeply rooted in New Orleans rhythm and culture. He leads SOUL Brass Band, Smoker’s World and Low End Theory Players, bringing together influences spanning brass band, funk, hip-hop, jazz, and contemporary music.

A respected collaborator and seasoned touring musician, Derrick has performed on stages throughout New Orleans and beyond, including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and French Quarter Festival, and has worked alongside an extensive range of acclaimed musicians throughout his career.

Beyond performing, Derrick is passionate about musicianship, collaboration, and the role percussion plays in shaping a band’s feel, energy, and identity. He brings both the perspective of a lifelong working musician and a bandleader to the Music Con NOLA percussionist panel.
